What You Need to E-File Your Federal Taxes

No matter which tax software you use, the IRS requires certain information to electronically file a federal tax return. Be sure you have the following:

  • A valid SSN or ITIN for you, your spouse, and any dependents
  • Your prior-year AGI or a self-selected PIN to verify your identity
    • First-time filers age 16 or older can usually enter “0” as their prior-year AGI
  • All income documents, such as W-2s and 1099 forms
  • Your bank account and routing number if you want your refund deposited directly (the fastest option)
